Which path adds more value?
If your career is in India, an AWS network engineer path adds more value. The work shows up at product companies, banks, IT services, and global capability centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. A Google Fiber network engineer works for Google Fiber, Alphabet’s fibre-to-the-home internet service in the United States. That is a real engineering job. It is not a job students in Pondicherry can treat as the next local offer.
People mix the names up because both say Google and both say network. Google Fiber is an internet provider. Google Cloud networking is a cloud job. This comparison is Fiber versus AWS, which is what the question asks.

What an AWS network engineer does
The day-to-day work is cloud network design and troubleshooting:
- Amazon VPC layout: CIDR ranges, public and private subnets, route tables
- Connecting accounts and offices with Transit Gateway, VPN, or Direct Connect
- Security groups, network ACLs, and AWS Network Firewall
- PrivateLink, load balancers, and DNS paths that break in quiet ways
- Reading VPC flow logs when an application “cannot connect”
The official starting point for the vocabulary is the Amazon VPC guide. You still need on-premises networking underneath it. Someone who cannot explain a route will not debug a missing route in AWS either. That is why CCNA before AWS training is the safer order for freshers.
What a Google Fiber network engineer does
Google Fiber sells fibre internet to households in selected US cities. Engineers on that network work on access and backbone problems: fibre plant, optical gear, IP aggregation, capacity, and customer-edge failures. Some roles lean toward outside plant and construction partners. Others lean toward IP and operations. The employer, the country, and the network type are specific.
There is no meaningful Google Fiber hiring market in Pondicherry or Chennai, because the service is not an Indian ISP. A resume line that says “preparing for Google Fiber” does not help an Indian recruiter. ISP skills can still help if you aim at Indian fibre operators, and you should describe them as fibre, GPON, or ISP networking rather than as a Google Fiber title.
Side-by-side
| Question | AWS network engineer | Google Fiber network engineer |
|---|---|---|
| What network is it? | Customer clouds on Amazon Web Services | Google’s US residential fibre internet |
| Where hiring happens | India metros, remote product teams, IT services | US cities on the Fiber footprint |
| Core skills | VPC, routing, hybrid links, cloud security | Fibre access, optics, ISP operations, IP |
| Transfers to other employers? | Yes. Azure and on-premises teams recognise the base | Mainly other ISPs, and mostly with US work rights |
| Typical study start in India | CCNA, then AWS, then Python | Not a local study target |
| India career value | High | Low, unless you can work in the US |
How to read “more value”
Value here means the next five years of employability, not which logo looks better on a slide. AWS networking wins that test for an Indian student because the same diagram skills apply at many companies. You can move from an IT-services cloud team to a product company without throwing away the last two years.
Google Fiber can be the better job for someone who already lives in a Fiber city, wants ISP engineering, and cares about access networks more than cloud. It does not add more value to a Pondicherry student’s career plan. Chasing a US-only title while skipping CCNA is how people lose a year.
Who should still learn fibre and ISP skills
Pick an ISP path, not the Google Fiber job title, if you like field coordination, optical links, and last-mile faults. Indian telecom and broadband companies hire that profile. Pair it with routing fundamentals so you are not limited to one vendor’s outside-plant process. Hardware and networking plus CCNA is a more honest local route than a Fiber job description copied from the US.
If you like security boundaries more than either cloud or fibre, look at network security after the routing base. Firewalls sit beside both careers. They do not replace the choice above.
What to study if you want the AWS side
- IP addressing, VLANs, routing, and NAT until you can teach them on a whiteboard.
- One cloud: AWS. Learn VPC before you collect unrelated certificates. Fees and exam shape are in our AWS certification cost guide.
- A short Python project once the diagrams are solid. Cloud teams script repetitive checks. See how much coding is actually required.
- One hybrid story for interviews: an office network connected to a VPC, what breaks, and how you would prove it.
Cloud computing is the wider context. The network slice inside it is what this comparison is about. Book a demo if you want that slice mapped against your semester timetable instead of against a US job post.
